You’ll find chic interiors, a deservedly popular restaurant, and lovely rooms, near Relax on one of the comfortable sofas by one of the four roaring fires and enjoy our delicious ales.

Packed with all the usual pub paraphernalia. Spoiled with a little bit of edible oomph.

Alex
The kitchen is headed up by Chef and owner Alexander Venables.  He has a fine cooking pedigree, having worked at The Savoy London, the Chester Grosvenor, and Cliveden in Taplow, bucks.  Latterly he has been head chef at Nearby  Lucknam park Hotel in Wiltshire and his first personally owned property The Tollgate Inn at Holt.  Alexander has a Michelin background and the kitchen has won the AA Rosette accolade.

A keen cyclist, Alex  heads up the pubs own cycle club “The Woolley Wheelers” who ride out from The George every Sunday at 9am.  Then back to the pub for bacon sarnies…..

Front of house is run by Alexanders “partner in crime” Alison Ward-Baptiste, who herself has country house hotel background too – from The Manor House at Castle Combe to  Lucknam Park Hotel, where she met Alex.  She was also the “other  half” at The Tollgate Inn at Holt for thirteen very successful years.

The George has a small but niche team of skilled staff – you are in good hands, whether you are drinking, eating or staying the night.

Food & Drink
At The George Pub, food is made strictly for the soul. Hearty, gutsy, plucky and really very good fun to eat, this is the kind of food that is simply cooked, and cleverly showcases Great British produce at its very best.

Expect traditional butcher’s cuts picked from Stiles Butchers in Bromham. Classic Beef wellington (if you haven’t tried it, heck you haven’t lived!), top of the crop veg from the Woolley allotments just behind the pub, ridiculously chunky chips and chefs favourite – home-rolled runny yolk scotch eggs, which we think are the most perfect accompaniment to a crisp pint of draft. It’s s close to fine-dining as pub grub gets.

The menu revolves around British classics such as pig’s cheek, Venison loin with a mini game pie, and pork belly with faggots, washed down with the ever-changing range of ales from  Twisted Brewery, GWB brewery in Brislington, St Austell  and Otter to name a few. Presentation is a high-point. There’s also a great wine list, with ten by the glass.

Changing with the seasons, our menus depend a lot on what fresh and provincial produce we can get our hands on from day to day. But for those eager for a glimpse of what to expect please tease away and have a peak at our pub aperitif.

The Bar
A cosy refuge from the elements, packed with comfy sofas and log fires burning on cool days. Add in a fine range of real ales from GWB brewery, Butcombe and St Austell brewery, craft beers, a carefully selected wine list and a varied selection of whiskeys, cognacs, ports and rums, we have a large list of craft gins in stock, perfect cocktails.  It’s the perfect place to while away a few hours.

The Garden
Pop out through the bar and relax in our south facing suntrap of a garden in the summer months, dining on our terrace, soaking up the sunshine and a pint. Look out for our summer Friday night BBQs with live music in July and August.

The Brunswick and The Hanover Suite
And just in case you’re fancying a bit of a celebration, we’ve got two rather lovely  dining rooms, prepped and ready for sharing with friends, family or business colleagues.  The Brunswick seats 16, perfect for a private dinner party and The Hanover seats 36. Always popular, especially for pre-wedding dinners and breakfasts, and business lunches that need to be a little longer and leave a lasting impression…
